While everyone else is on pacing break this week end going back home or catching up on schoolwork, Patriot League games are just beginning for Lehigh sports team. Most vacations, in fact, aren't a rest for student-athletes, but times of focused practice or conditioning.

Athletes here live double lives, like Batman, keeping up with rigorous curriculum and physically exhausting practices and competition. In return they are restricted from alcohol use, their grades are scrutinized and get lukewarm support from student fans. Even Lafayette College beats us in the amount of fans that come out to support their teams.

We could do better.

The problem is party from geography. Our campus is segregated into Asa Packer campus, Mountaintop campus and Goodman Campus. Moving between these areas is difficult without a car, and nearly impossible at non-regular hours or during many games. Some freshmen attend their first sports game only to be stuck without a ride back from Goodman.
On another note, Goodman Campus is a part of Lehigh's campus, not just a place for student-athletes. To deny easy access to this recreational asset is to deny students a part of the Lehigh experience.

And why is the athletics department asked to pick up the bill for buses over to Goodman during athletic events, as they do now? Transportation services appears more equipped to handle something like transportation, and athletics more equipped to handle, say, athletics. Transportation services should be set up to transport students, not to make a quick buck of the athletic department to get students over to events.

If you do happen to be staying during pacing break, do your athletic teams a favor and support them as the Patriot League's first league games begin.
