The Association of Student Alumni and the Lehigh class officers have reinstated the Lehigh-Lafayette bonfire.
After a two-year absence, the bonfire will return to Goodman Campus at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15.
Although ASA and the class officers started planning the event, they are by no means running it and need campus wide support in order for the event to succeed said Cheryl Kaplun, '08, president of ASA.
"It is important to realize that the bonfire wasn't banned by the university, it just faded from lack of support," Kaplun said.
The bonfire remained on hiatus due to lack of organization and planning from student groups.
"This is why it's really important for the whole student body to really get excited about the bonfire and come out and participate," Kaplun said.
ASA and the class officers started planning the event's comeback this past July.
"The Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry is the one thing that unites our campus," Kaplun said. "It's one of the oldest traditions in our school's history, and it's something the students really love."
Open fires are not permitted in the city of Bethlehem, so the bonfire must be held on Goodman Campus, which is in Saucon Valley.
Transportation will be provided to and from Goodman, with schedules provided on the ASA website, www.lehigh.edu/~inasa.
The event will provide food and refreshments to students in attendance.
In addition to refreshments, the pep band, cheerleaders, dance team and a disc jockey will provide entertainment.
The class officers and ASA are working with the student athlete council to see what other teams can support Lehigh athletics at the bonfire.
The officers and ASA are also working with the pep band and the cheerleaders on a specific cheer to be unveiled at the rally, Kaplun said
"For those who haven't been to the bonfire, picture an old-fashioned pep rally and throw in a huge fire, and that's what the event will be all about," Kaplun said.
