This past Saturday the women's club rugby team beat rival Lafayette College, 19-12.

The team trailed Lafayette 12-5 at halftime.

But the Hawks came out strong in the second half with scores by juniors Corey Luthringer and Maura Douglass. The scores came halfway through the second half.

With intense defense and hustle, Lehigh shutdown the visiting Leopards and closed out the game strong. The final tackle of the game was made by senior Chris Diggs.

"The team played their hardest all game because it was against Lafayette, and played even better in the last five minutes," senior Emily Szabo said. "We were evenly matched up, but we were able to play good defense and hold them to no scores."

Luthringer said that whenever Lafayette is involved, there is always an increased feeling of competition.

"Of course we feel the rivalry," Luthringer said. "It is a lot more intense when we play Lafayette because we rarely lose to them and want to keep it that way."

Junior Devin Carey said she agreed, and added that the Lafayette game is the most popular game for the women every year.

"The game versus Lafayette is the game all the girls on the team want to win most," Carey said.

Szabo has seen the games between the Hawks and Leopards get closer every year since she began playing on the team as a freshman.

"This year [Lafayette] got a new coach and the game was definitely more even than in past years," she said.

With the victory over Lafayette, the team is just one win away from qualifying for the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union Divisional Playoffs.

Saturday, the team travels to Muhlenberg College for a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

"We are really excited to have this opportunity," Carey said. "We are only one win away from the playoffs, something every girl on the team has been eyeing since we began our season."
