Senior midfielder Marny Hearn controls the ball for the Mountain Hawks. Hearn, one of five seniors on the team, helped earn a victory over Rider University Wednesday.

The field hockey team battled back from a two-point deficit to take a 4-2 win over Rider University Wednesday at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

The Mountain Hawks, down 2-0 at the end of the first half, came back at the start of the second.

Less than three minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Kelly Fox scored off an assist by junior forward Kara Zweizig. Four minutes later, senior midfielder Christy Smith assisted junior forward Kalynn Davies for another goal for Lehigh, tying the game at two.

Zweizig scored Lehigh's third goal with 18:23 left in the game off another assist by Smith.

As the clock wound down to two minutes, Davies scored a second goal off of an assist from Fox, clinching the victory for the Mountain Hawks.

This is the first time the Hawks have beat Rider since 2001.

Davies leads the Hawks in scoring this season with 24 points, including 11 goals and two assists.

Although Lehigh held excellent control of the game in the first half, Rider was able to hold off the advance, which hindered Lehigh's ability to finish plays, Head Coach Julie Mazer said.

"We were possessing the ball better than Rider in the middle of the field," Mazer said. "But we weren't able to get the shots off."

Rider's two first half goals did not affect Lehigh's attitude. Being behind in the beginning was not unfamiliar territory, Mazer said.

"Unfortunately, we've put ourselves in that type of position too many times this year," Mazer said. "But what has impressed me about this team is they have fought back from being down many times this year. We definitely kept fighting, stayed composed and went to work right in the beginning of the second half."

Smith said she believes their past experiences with come-from-behind play helped them rally together and regain control of the game.

"We now have the experience and the confidence that we can still get out of it, and we made that happen," Smith said.

Smith said the team concentrated on maintaining its strengths and fixing its weaker points to start the second half.
