The first major step to combating the illegal immigration problem is to construct two fences along the U.S.-Mexican border, said former U.S. Treasurer Bay Buchanan.

Buchanan addressed the issue of illegal immigration and open borders between Mexico and the U.S. Thursday night in Packard Auditorium.

The fences she proposed will stop the large passage of illegal immigrants along the southern border, particularly in Arizona.

In addition to the fences, laws should be passed that prosecute employers for hiring illegal immigrants, Buchanan said.

Buchanan began the lecture, titled "Immigration: Time for a Moratorium," by addressing the effects of an open border between the U.S. and Mexico.

Because the system has no way of controlling the flow of people into the U.S., the open border is unable to regulate immigration.

Buchanan said the open border could be a potential threat to the nation.

With the open border comes an increase in gang presence, crime and drugs, Buchanan said.

"If this issue is not addressed, we will lose our nation," Buchanan said.

Buchanan said one gang, MS-13, has established itself in the U.S., starting battles in the streets and killing one another to obtain control of drug trafficking routes.

The open border also raises the issue of over-crowded schools and hospitals.

Buchanan believes American tax payers should not be responsible for supporting over-crowded schools and hospitals full of illegal immigrants.

Buchanan said, in the future, illegal immigrants will continue to take the jobs of many American workers. Because some U.S. businesses are looking for inexpensive labor, employers favor illegal immigration so they have lower production costs.

"These people are coming in and competing with the neediest of America and we're allowing it," Buchanan said.

Buchanan blames corporate America and the government for permitting what she calls an "undermining" of American workers. Because of this corruption, many Americans are unemployed and in poverty.

"Washington is allowing their corporate friends to violate our laws," Buchanan said.

As the president of The American Cause and chairman of Team America Political Action Committee, Buchanan regularly speaks on the issues of border protection and immigration reform.
