The women's field hockey team battled Colgate University on the rain-soaked turf, winning 3-2 in overtime at the Ulrich Sports Complex Saturday.
With the win, Lehigh clinched the No. 2 spot in the Patriot League tournament which takes place next weekend at American University in Washington D.C. This is Lehigh's fourth consecutive bid to the tournament.
The Mountain Hawks finished the regular season with an 8-9 record, 3-2 in the Patriot League.
Battling into a 2-2 deadlock in regulation, the Hawks took the win in overtime when senior midfielder and co-captain Christy Smith intercepted a Raider pass and drove into the scoring circle, earning Lehigh a penalty corner. Smith, assisted by junior midfielder Kalynn Davies, scored the winning goal less than a minute into overtime.
All of the Hawks' league wins have come off overtime goals by Smith, who has 21 points, including eight goals and five assists.
Lehigh Head Coach Julie Mazer said she knew this game was a huge opportunity for her team and she was very proud of the effort they put forth.
"To have that kind of pressure in an end-of-season game and to come through was huge," Mazer said.
The game was back-and-forth from the beginning. Tied 1-1 heading into the second half, the Hawks regained the lead 22 minutes into the period, converting on a corner set up by Smith's drive. Junior forward Kara Zweizig pushed in the teams' second point of the game, her eighth of the season. Smith, along with her sister, sophomore midfielder Lindsey Smith had assists on the score.
Colgate tried to quickly answer the Hawks' lead with another penalty corner scoring opportunity, but senior back Lauren Volpe stopped the Raiders' efforts, clearing the corner on the goal line.
The Raiders found themselves in another scoring position just three minutes after Lehigh took the 2-1 lead when Raiders' junior midfielder Laura Flisnik drove to the goal after a penalty corner and sophomore forward Courtney Kundtz deflected her shot past Hawks' freshman goalie Jessica Miller for her first score of the year, tying the game 2-2.
