In preparation for the 2008 Middle States Commission on Higher Education Accreditation, Lehigh has opened discussion in the program chapter of Advancement of Student Learning on Facebook.com.

Recently, many students received an e-mail explaining the new group on Facebook, "Lehigh Needs to be Reaccredited," and how students may comment through Facebook instead of Blackboard.

Moses said the university came up with the idea of as Facebook group when the committee met with different student groups.

"I was not fully aware of [Facebook's] potential," Moses said. "In a meeting with the Council of Student Presidents, several of the students confirmed that students would be less likely to use Blackboard for something not required than Facebook. So I set it up."

The group consists of links to the documents the special-selected student topics, chapters three to five.

Students enter their Lehigh user ID and password to view the files, which provides access to the recommended sections and allow students to comment directly in the discussion boards.
In addition, Divya Nayar, '10, parliamentarian of the Student Senate, informed Senate members of the various feedback options during the accreditation process.

"It is almost crunch time," Nayar said, "and the open comment period on the different drafts is almost over. I reiterated to Senate members how important it was for them as student leaders to set an example for the entire campus and express their feelings on any of the aspects which the drafts address."

Carl Moses, head of the accreditation steering committee and co-chair of the chapter, said the exact amount of feedback received is not known because each report subcommittees are managing those efforts individually, Moses said.

"One of my aims now that we have complete first drafts [of all the chapters] to work with, is to identify opportunities to cross reference from one report to another," Moses said. "A couple of examples of cross-references are between the Advancement of Student Learning chapter and the Technology chapter. Technology support entails a lot of assessment to ensure that we are adopting appropriate technology and deploying most effectively."
