BusinessWeek magazine ranked Lehigh's part-time Master's of business administration program fifth in the nation and first in the Mid-Atlantic region in a list the magazine published on its Web site Nov. 1.

Paul Brown, dean of the College of Business and Economics, said the list marked Lehigh's place among other university MBA programs.

"I think it says that we clearly play in the big leagues," Brown said.

Lehigh ranked against schools such as New York University, the University of Southern California, the University of California Los Angeles, Emory University and the University of Chicago.

The ranking is the first time BusinessWeek rated part-time business programs.

Lehigh's part-time MBA program offers students the flexibility of pursuing a career while attending the university at night or on weekends.

Jennifer Marshall, a part-time graduate student, said she chose Lehigh because of its flexible hours.

Marshall said the reputation of the university itself was also a contributing factor in her decision to attend Lehigh.

Mary Taglang, director of graduate student programs, said the only difference between the full-time and part-time MBA program is the time it takes for the student to complete the courses required for the degree.

Taglang was out of the country when the BusinessWeek rankings were released.

She said she was not surprised when she called the office and heard the results.

"I always knew this program was very strong," Taglang said, "and now we have outside validation."

Brown said he believes Lehigh deserves this ranking due to the distinctiveness of the program.

Brown said substantial interaction occurs between faculty and students and the program integrates traditional disciplines.

Marshall said she agrees.

She said team teaching is used so two professors from different backgrounds offer varying perspectives.

Brown said students are happy with the rankings.
