At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a Lehigh student was robbed near the corner of Fourth and New streets. The student was not injured, said Edward Shupp, chief of Lehigh police, in an e-mail safety bulletin Thursday.
Members of the Lehigh University Police Department apprehended the suspect after a brief foot pursuit, and the suspect's residence was searched, police said.
Property stolen from Lehigh students over the past few weeks was found in the search, police said.
Shupp said the suspect was apprehended quickly because the Bethlehem and Lehigh police departments increased patrols in the neighborhoods around campus.
The Bethlehem Police Department will continue to investigate, and the Lehigh police department is expected to file charges for the previous crimes, police said.
"There have been numerous crimes at both locations we have been investigating," Shupp said.
As of Friday, charges had not yet been filed.
Shupp said other suspects are still at large.
He said the investigation is in its early stages, but is moving along at a good pace.
Shupp said he could make no further comments on the case to protect the integrity of the investigation, as the police are in the process of gathering information about the incident.
Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Lehigh police at 610-758-4200 or the Bethlehem police at 610-865-7187.
Shupp's Nov. 8 e-mail safety bulletin to the campus community about the incident was the third in the past three weeks alerting the campus community that a Lehigh student had been robbed on or near campus.
Those robberies occurred Oct. 26 and Oct. 27, on Montclair Avenue and Packer Avenue, respectively.
In the Oct. 26 robbery, a student's purse and its contents were taken. In the Oct. 27 robbery, a student's cell phone was taken, police said.
The victims were not injured, police said.
