With the Pennsylvania primary quickly approaching, you may expect a college campus to be buzzing about the candidates and their stances on major issues. But, many Lehigh students are more worried about writing a paper that is due tomorrow than doing the research necessary to educate themselves about the candidates.
Students, especially seniors, should realize how much the presidential election will change our lives. Graduating seniors will soon enter the real world and be expected to pay taxes and their own health insurance - things which are greatly affected by the decisions of the president.
This is the perfect time to think about and research the candidates, and not only the ones in your political party of choice. Don't vote for someone simply because your parents vote for them, or because you think they're funny, attractive or a good public speaker.
Although there are some events organized to get students excited about the primary, such as political speakers and debates, a lack of interest seems to remain.
However there is one thing about which Lehigh students never fail to get excited: drinking. While many students don't really care about the artists at Sundaze or attending football games, they would certainly never miss the tailgate or after parties. Perhaps with this in mind, College Democrats is planning a pub crawl for Senator Barack Obama; but is this really the only way students will pay attention to the issues?
