The Lehigh baseball team beat the New Jersey Institute of Technology 5-1 on Tuesday at Goodman Campus.
The win boosts the Mountain Hawks' record to 17-22, while NJIT falls to 2-29 on the season and adds to its current 23-game losing streak.
Freshman Mike Lebo pitched all nine innings for the Hawks in their victory. Lebo gave up four hits and one run, bringing his pitching record to 1-1.
Freshman outfielder Andrew Russell said Lebo had an impressive day on the mound.
"I think that our pitcher Mike Lego did a great job, pitching a complete game and only giving up one run and a couple of hits," Russell said. "He did a great job of mixing up his pitches and keeping the hitters off balance."
Russell had three of the Hawks' eight hits on the day, going 3-4 from the plate and bringing in one run.
Russell said he credits the team's defense for the victory, especially clutch plays by senior infielder Liam O'Connor, freshman infielder Brendan McGaheran and junior infielder Geoff Campbell.
"What helped us win the most today was our good defense," Russell said. "Our third baseman and middle infield made some great plays, which saved a couple of runs for us."
The Highlanders scored their one and only run in the top of the first inning.
But the Hawks rebounded in the bottom of the first. A two-out error put McGaheran on base. In the next play, a triple by Russell brought McGaheran home, tying the game 1-1. Freshman infielder Joe Bellini's hit brought Russell home, putting the score at 2-1 in the Hawks' favor.
Freshman catcher Greg Turcotte got his first RBI when he singled to bring O'Connor home in the second. Later in the inning, Turcotte scored on a hit by senior outfielder Joe Ercolano, which brought the score to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, O'Connor brought in a run to make the game 5-1. He now has 10 RBIs on the season.
O'Connor said the team's offense especially has room for improvement.
"We could have done better offensively today," O'Connor said. "We could have gotten more people on base and performed a little better in situational hitting."
The Hawks return to league play this weekend at Army in back-to-back doubleheaders in West Point, N.Y. Army is 15-18 on the season and 7-5 in league play.
