After reading "Closed doors" (April 15, 2008), I was immediately reminded of an incident that occurred recently.
My friends and I were walking home from the Hill one night when a car with non-Lehigh students drove up, and the passengers tried to get us to come into the car. Quickly, we moved far away from the car and called the Lehigh police. Although this happened right outside the police station, it took way too long for police to get to the suspicious car.
This deeply concerned me. I want to know where these cops were and why they did not respond quickly. Were they looking for parties to break up or trying to catch drunk people stumbling on the Hill? Even if there was some serious incident going on that required immediate attention, I still find it ridiculous that in a situation where my friends and I felt unsafe there wasn't a faster response. Even the person who answered the phone had to put us on hold.
The police should be dealing with suspicious people on campus, especially after the recent muggings and other incidents. The parties and drunk people can wait; we should have felt safe walking in front of the police station, and that night, this was not the case.
